On February 9, 2021, the E-BIKE (Electric Bicycle Incentive Kickstart for the Environment) Act was introduced by Congressman Jimmy Panetta and Earl Blumenauer. This bill would provide a refundable tax credit of up to $1,500 when consumers purchase a new e-bike. If passed, electric bikes would become more accessible, and carbon emissions would drop drastically with their rise in popularity.
What the Proposal Includes
The consumer tax credit created by the E-BIKE Act would cover 30% of a new e-bike $8,000 or less, and is fully refundable. The next time you apply for money back from the IRS, you could add this to your refund.
The act was proposed to help fight the climate crisis by enabling more everyday Americans to own e-bikes. This will not only help the environment but also public health.
Current Status
The bill was referred to the House Committee on Ways and Means on February 11. It is expected to take a while before reaching the Senate, so we are urging you to send your representative a short letter supporting the E-BIKE Act and encouraging your representative to do the same. PeopleForBikes, an organization dedicated to “Changing the world through bikes… To get more people riding bikes more often. To make bike riding better for everyone” noted that studies have shown that there would be an 11% decrease in carbon emissions with a 15% increase in E-Bike mode share.
At EBC, our mission is aligned with that of PeopleForBikes – our founder Sean Lupton-Smith was focused on helping the 99% of the population who don’t currently cycle when he established the Electric Bike Company. He has done this by building a range of best-in-class electric cruisers that open the doors for them… the people who would not consider riding a bike because of hills, distance, age, fitness or even the simple inconvenience of arriving at work in a lather!
