Electric Bike Class System Made Simple

If you’re a long-time e-bike rider, or maybe just really enthusiastic about electric bikes, you may be familiar with the class system. We’re going to get a bit technical today, but don’t leave quite yet. This is important information if you own or plan on purchasing an e-bike, and we’ll make it easy and simple to understand.

What is the Class System?

Let’s start with the basics. The electric bike class system is composed of 3 classes that determine certain features or characteristics of e-bikes. They also act as an answer to the uncertainty about whether e-bikes should be classified as bicycles or motorized vehicles.

They are often used in individual state regulations for what types of e-bikes are allowed and what the top speed is capped at. It’s important to check your state laws to ensure that you’re meeting all regulations set in place.

Class 1

Class 1 e-bikes are limited to a top speed of 20 miles per hour, in which the motor stops assisting. The e-bike also only works when the rider is pedaling. Usually, class 1 e-bikes are allowed on bike lanes and paths that are also shared with traditional bikes.

Class 2

Whereas the motor in class 1 can only assist when pedaling, class 2 opens the opportunity of being throttle-assisted. This means that the throttles will work whether you’re pedaling or not. The speed is also 20 miles per hour, which is when the motor ceases to provide assistance.

Class 3

Class 3 e-bikes hit an entire 8 mph higher than the first two, which means they can reach speeds of 28 miles per hour. These bikes must also have a speedometer and may or may not have a throttle. Be sure to check the state’s laws on class 3 because this is where it gets limited.

EBC’s E-Bike Class

Whether you have an EBC bike or you’re contemplating buying one, it’s good to know that EBC’s bikes come as class 2, but can be configured to class 1 or class 3. To change your bike to class 1, you’ll want to remove the throttle. If you’re looking to upgrade your bike to class 3, simply adjust the settings. For more detailed information on how to change the classes, watch this video for step-by-step instructions.

EBC offers flexibility within their e-bikes and the features that make them unique, such as the ability to switch between classes. Though the class system may seem unnecessary to know much about, it’s important to stay up-to-date on regulations for your safety and others. And you wouldn’t want to get in trouble with the law, of course.

Now go outside, stay safe, and have fun riding.
